STCG

Tax on gains from assets held short term. For Indian equity: 20% on holdings under 12 months.

Short-Term Capital Gains (STCG) is the tax on profits from selling an asset held for less than the long-term threshold. For Indian equity and equity mutual funds, gains on holdings under 12 months are taxed at 20% (raised from 15% post-Budget 2024).

Debt mutual funds bought after 1 April 2023 are taxed at slab rate regardless of holding period — there's no STCG/LTCG distinction. Property STCG is also at slab rate, applied to gains from sales within 24 months.
